A MOTHER was left overwhelmed after a Grays builder generously fitted a wet room for her disabled daughter...free of charge.

Vince Knight, who runs VK Services, based in Highfield Gardens, Grays, carried out the work to fit a £6,000 wet room, so Katie Anderson, 12, can shower without her mum Dee having to help.

Katie suffers with a condition called neurofibramatosis and has a tumour growing on her spinal cord, which is spreading to her brain, robbing her of her ability to walk.

But, thanks to Vince’s generosity, the youngster is now able to shower independently.

The Grays man’s kind deed has been seen by thousands of people on Facebook, with the social media site’s stats showing 1.4million people have viewed his post about the work.

The gift came about after Wipe Away Those Tears, a Romfordbased charity, approached Dee offering to pay for a wet room.

When Dee appealed for local builders on Facebook, Vince, 46, answered her call.

Dee said: “Vince came round and had a look and met Katie.

They hit it off straight away.

“We had just arrived at hospital for Katie’s second round of chemotherapy when Vince called and said there would be no charge. I burst into tears – I was overwhelmed.”

Vince, who called on the help of Thurrock Supplies and Tilbury Tiles, said: “I slept on it for a couple of days and then called to say I would do the wet room for her and there would be no charge to her or the charity.

“Sometimes you’ve just got to give something back.”
