THIS week, we spoke to Lin Swords and Lydia Keys, from the SS17 Christmas Tree Appeal, Stanford-le-Hope.

The lifelong friends set out to raise £1,000 so the town can have a tree on The Green this year...

Q: What do you love about Thurrock?

A: We live in Stanford-le- Hope, which is a smallish community.

We have found a great community spirit, which has been highlighted since the Stanford Facebook page came about.

Q: What has kept you here?

A: Family, work and friends.

Q: How do you see the future for the appeal in the borough?

A: Our appeal is for Stanford and we see it progressing within the next year with different ideas for our community, i.e.

planting of the hanging baskets and planters Q: How do you think other parts of Essex see Thurrock?

A: As an industrial area Q: What advice would you give to people wanting to set up their own organisations in the borough?

A: Just to go for it, like we did.

Q: What made you start the Christmas Tree Appeal?

A: We started this appeal because we read on the Stanford Facebook page that, due to lack of funds, Stanford would not be having a Christmas tree or decorations. So, this is when we came up with idea of selling triangles to be decorated, then we will make bunting to be displayed in most shops in Stanford town from December 1. We would like to let Stanford know the switch-on for Christmas will be held on Monday, December 1, at 7pm, on The Green.

Q: What involvement with the community does the appeal have?

A: The appeal is about the community, from local businesses, local groups and individuals donating their time and money towards the appeal, for which we would like to say a massive thank you to our very special community.

Q: What do you like about the Gazette?

A: It informs people of local projects and events. It’s vital.
