After an 11 hour fight, three Grays fire crews have successfully extinguished a large 'fly-tip' fire behind a Tilbury football pitch.

Firefighters who raced to the scene at St Chad's Road last night found several hundred tonnes of mixed waste behind a football pitch ablaze.

A huge pile the size of 150 metres by 80 metres of fly-tipped rubbish, including carpet tiles and building materials, was on fire for the second time in under four days.

The fire was extinguished today at 11am and no casualties have so far been reported.

It is believed to have been started deliberately.

Firefighters used foam, hose reels, plant machinery and fire appliances to tackle the 'very large' rubbish pile and reported that last night it was 100 percent alight.

They also used fire appliances at the scene made sure the fire didn't spread and plant machinery was used to break up the pile to reach the hotspots.

The cause of the fires is being investigated by the fire service and due to be investigated by the council.

More to follow.
