A CLAMPDOWN on letting agents is underway after a Thurrock Council probe revealed significant numbers were not abiding by government guidlines.

In October last year, the government ordered letting agents to publish information about their fees, and whether their client’s rent and charges are protected.

Council officers recently discovered some agents are not complying, and 13 have been issued with a notice of intent. Those breaching the rules can face a fine of up to £5,000.

Councillor Rob Gledhill, leader of the council, said: “These requirements provide essential information to residents and it is important that they are implemented across the borough.

“Despite officers engaging with the letting agents and offering advice and guidance, some are not doing what is legally expected of them.

“I encourage those agents who have been contacted by Trading Standards to respond fully and make this information freely available to residents.”

Thurrock Council’s Trading Standards team visited 33 letting agencies in May.

Since then, the body has been providing them with advice on fair trading, deposits, repairs and tenancy agreements.

Advice for local residents who are looking to rent through a letting agent can be found on the council website.
