BITTER words were exchanged in the buildup to the election in Chafford Hundred and North Stifford, particularly between top Tory and sitting councillor Garry Hague and Lib Dem candidate Earnshaw Palmer.

But it was Conservative councillor Hague who emerged victorious with 476 majority. It was scant consolation for former councillor Mr Palmer that he pushed the BNP into third and Labour into fourth.

Councillor Hague said: ""I'd like to thank all the people of Chafford and North Stifford for re-electing me as their councillor.

"It's not just about this campaign it's about four years of hard work."

Mr Palmer said: "The people have spoken. I have nothing to say."

Result:

Garry Hague (Con) 866

Earnshaw Palmer (Lib Dem) 390

Sandra Strickson (BNP)201

Martin Healy (Lab) 188
