A WOMAN from the Basildon area has tested positive for Swine flu.

The lady, who is in her seventies, is said to have mild symptoms and is responding well to anti-virals at home.

She has not travelled abroad, but has been in close contact with a man in another part of Essex, who it has already been confirmed has the virus.

Dr Katherine Gronqvist, Director of Public Health at NHS South West Essex said: “We have in place robust plans to tackle Swine flu and keep them under regular review. Our incident team meets regularly to monitor the situation.

“There are simple steps that everyone can take to help prevent catching colds and flu, based on good respiratory and hand hygiene. Always use a tissue to catch your sneezes, throw away used tissues where germs can linger and regularly wash your hands.

She added: “If people are concerned because they have been to Mexico, the US or any of the other affected areas – or if they have been in close contact with someone known to have swine flu - and are developing influenza like symptoms, avoid going to your GP or A&E and stay at home, call your GP or contact NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 or via the web at www.nhs.uk “
