DANNY Heale has called on Canvey Island to repeat their treble over Grays Athletic last season with another win against their rivals tonight.

The Gulls go into the league encounter off the back of successive wins, and have a mixed record in this season’s derby matches – having beaten Billericay Town and lost to East Thurrock United.

Canvey were winners on three occasions against Grays last campaign, scoring eight goals in the process, but Heale is not underestimating Athletic, who currently sit in seventh position in the division and have won three of their last four league outings.

“Jody Brown is doing very well over there,” said the Gulls manager. “It’s a local derby and we will be looking to continue our record against them from last season.

“Saying that, we are in confident mood ourselves. We are coming off the back of two consecutive wins and clean sheets so the feeling in the group is good and we are up for the challenge.”

Canvey will travel to Mill Field without their captain Jay Curran (who is serving a five match suspension), Tambeson Eyong (three match suspension) and Ashley Dumas (thigh) while on-loan West Ham United midfielder Ben Marlow is also unavailable.

Marlow is playing for West Ham’s under-21 side in a behind-closed-doors match as part of his rehabilitation from a fractured metatarsal – which Heale confirmed was part of the deal that saw the teenager move to the Prospects Stadium.

Heale also gave his reaction to the FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round draw, which will see his team travel to Southern League Division One side Barton Rovers on Saturday, October 11.

“I suppose on the face of it we should be pleased with the draw,” said Heale. “They are in a division below us and are mid-table but they beat Margate which means they deserve our respect.

“It will be a good test for us and we would love to get through to the first round proper, so we look forward to the Barton challenge.”

l Bowers & Pitsea are also in action tonight in the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy.

Rob Small takes his side to Tower Hamlets in the first round of the competition for their eigthth cup match in 11 games.

l Basildon United host Great Knightleys in a friendly match at the TLM Stadium tonight.

The match kicks off at 7:45pm at the TLM Stadium, with entry £3.
