SAM Higgins says he hasn’t finished yet after he scored his 150th goal for East Thurrock United.

The prolific striker, who became the club’s record goalscorer at the start of the season, has been in lethal form so far this term and scored his 29th goal of the campaign in the 1-0 win over Leiston on Saturday.

And Higgins, 24, says he is now focussed on adding to the tally as he aims to fire Rocks into the play-offs come May.

“It was a good goal,” he admitted, having taken a touch and shot in off the far post after a ball over the top from Lewis Smith. “I have scored a few but that was a particularly good one and it was more important as it came at a vital time.

“It was a very close game and we knew it was going to be a match with only a few chances. And, luckily, when a chance dropped to us we were able to take it.

“I think we deserved to get the win and it keeps us heading the right way up the table.”

And Higgins, who scored on his debut for the club on October 10, 2009 against Wingate & Finchley, says he ranks the goal alongside his volley against Grays Athletic earlier in the season.

“The volley at Grays earlier in the season was quite a good one,” said the hotshot. “And I scored a good one against Canvey last year too, but it’s all about the next game.

“I want to get to 40 goals this season. I had targeted 35 at the start of the season but I have picked up a few in the run over Christmas so I will try to push on.”

Higgins is in his third spell at the club, having previously played for Conference South rivals Concord Rangers, and says he has always been happiest at Rookery Hill.

“I have always done well at East Thurrock. I get on well with the boys and have always been given a fair chance. Circumstances haven’t been right for me at other clubs and I have always been happiest here.”

“I never set out to be top scorer when I joined the club all those years ago, but I have got a few. I have been playing a lot of games here and been consistent when reaching my targets so if I can keep helping the club then I am happy.”

Rocks sit fifth in the league after a fine recent run saw them lose only one of the last 17 league games.

But Higgins says Rocks are still up against it as they look to secure a top five finish.

“Met Police have games in hand on us. We are doing well at home but need to turn a few more draws into wins. We have 17 games to go and will be fighting right until the end.”
