Wroxham 1-2 Aveley

AVELEY secured a fine win at play-off hopefuls Wroxham to end their season on the road on a high.

The Millers ran out 2-1 winners to end the Norfolk side’s ambitions of a top five finish, and ensure they would be finishing the season in the top half.

The game started slowly, with the only notable action an injury picked up to the league’s second top scorer Christy Finch (who it has since been discovered has sustained ligament damage).

Aveley’s first chance came when Luke Stanley drilled over the bar following good wing play from pacey winger Theo Ola but the goal came on the half hour mark.

It was Sammy Knott who scored it and it was a goal to remember. From a free-kick, Knott bent a delightful delivery over the wall and in off the underside of the crossbar.

It appeared it would stay that way until half-time but a moment of madness pegged Justin Gardner’s side back.

The highly-rated Matty Bakare tried a flick in a defensive position and the ball was stolen from him by Remy Gordon, who advanced on goal and scored past James Marrable.

The second-half was a much more even affair and it was a late goal that tipped the balance in Millers’ favour.

Neat play from the returning Marcus Elliott, out for 10 weeks through injury, saw him play in Arian Retkoceri and he crashed home to put the visitors back in front.

That was how it stayed, with Aveley heading home happy.
