Merstham 2–2 East Thurrock United

From Weldon Way

Ryman Premier League

EAST Thurrock United were held to a draw by a feisty Merstham side in Surrey.

Rocks came from behind to secure an equaliser, with Ryan Scott in the right place at the right time to grab the goal with 15 minutes left on the clock.

It was the first time that East Thurrock manager John Coventry had faced Merstham in his spell in charge and he was in confident mood.

East Thurrock had romped to a fine 4-0 win at leaders Leiston in the week and were playing their first game in more than 25 years against the Surry outfit.

Rocks had two in form players in Sam Higgins and Lewis Smith and it was no surprise that Higgins, last year’s Ryman Premier League top-scorer, found the net after just four minutes.

In front of a crowd of more than 500, the home side responded and it was Tom Kavanagh that levelled just after the half hour mark.

The away side had chances to regain the lead but they fell behind on the hour mark. Fabio Saraiva worked space well to get the goal but that only lasted 10 minutes.

Scott was on the mark to get the goal but, despite several late chances, they couldn’t get the goal they desired.
