BOXING talent Charlie Driscoll says he boxed “a punch-perfect performance” as he won on his professional debut against Nottinghamshire fighter Fonz Alexander.

The Ockendon super lightweight, 22, won a points decision at Bethnal Green’s York Hall, having knocked down the man six years his senior in the second round of the bout.

Driscoll, of south London’s Lynn AC, recently signed terms with Frank Warren & Queensbury Promotions, and he said he was pleased to chalk up his first win in front of more than 100 supporters.

“I went brilliantly and I boxed really well,” said Driscoll, whose father is the head coach of the England schoolboys boxing team. “My performance was pretty punch-perfect and I managed to stay calm as well which was important.

“I had a lot of support and it was great knowing there were so many people behind me and singing my name, it made it that extra bit special.

“I had him down in the second round after hitting him with a right hand a left hook and he only just made the count. He wasn’t the same after that to be honest and I felt calm and kept on top of him.

“I have boxed at York Hall in the past as a schoolboy, junior and senior and that put me in a strong position. You need to focus your mind on what you need to do and I felt in control throughout.”

Driscoll won 40 points to 35 against Alexander, who has lost 36 of his 39 fights, 33 on points.

The Ockendon pugilist says he believes his next fight will be in August or September but is wasting no time in the week after his first victory.

The fighter is already back in the gym, and he says he is looking forward to his next training camp.

“I don’t mind training and preparing even if I don’t know my next opponent,” added Driscoll, who is coached by ex-amateur trainer Sam Mullins. “I like to keep things ticking over and I am looking forward to the next one already.”

Driscoll thanked his sponsors Pimlico Plumbing & Heating Merchants and Everyone Active for their continued support.
